AS 5221 Part 1 – 2021 Edition – Cranes – Design principles for loads and load combinations, Part 1: General
AS 5221.1:2021 establishes the general methods for calculating loads and the principles for selecting load combinations used in the design and verification of crane structures and mechanical components.
This Standard aligns with ISO 8686-1 and supports proofs of competence in accordance with ISO 20332, applying to cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1.
Scope of AS 5221 Part 1
This Standard provides:
- General methods for determining crane loads and load effects
- Principles for selecting load combinations for structural and mechanical design
- Guidance applicable to a wide range of crane types, including situations where no specific standard exists
The methodology is based on:
- Rigid body kinetic analysis
- Elastostatic analysis
It also permits the use of advanced calculation methods or testing, provided that they deliver equivalent or higher levels of safety and performance.
Applications
AS 5221.1:2021 supports two main types of application:
a) Framework for Specific Crane Standards
- Defines the general structure, content, and parameter ranges
- Serves as a basis for developing specific standards for different crane types
b) Design and Procurement Agreement
- Provides a framework for agreement between:
- Designers / manufacturers, and
- Crane purchasers
- Particularly useful where no dedicated crane standard is available
