AS 1799.1 – 2025 Edition – Small craft, Part 1: Essential safety requirements for power boats

AS 1799.1:2025 outlines the essential safety requirements for powered craft up to 15 meters in length used as recreational boats. The standard sets guidelines for the following key safety features:

  • Maximum load capacities

  • Person capacity

  • Power capacities

  • Reserve buoyancy

  • Stability

  • Fire protection (addressed separately from other safety requirements)

This document applies exclusively to powered recreational boats and does not apply to:

  • Commercial boats

  • Boats used exclusively for racing

  • Canoes, kayaks, inflatable boats, rigid inflatable boats, yachts, or auxiliary yachts

Scope and Limitations

  • Note 1: These requirements (except for fire protection) have been identified in the National Standard for the Australian Builders Plate for Recreational Boats as crucial to the safety of small craft.

  • Note 2: Although fire protection is not included in the National Standard for the Australian Builders Plate, it is deemed an essential safety feature for powered craft.

  • Note 3: Additional safety requirements for powered craft (beyond load, persons, and power capacities, buoyancy, and stability) are addressed in other parts of AS 1799. The fire protection requirements in this document are expected to be relocated to another part of AS 1799 in the future.

Relevance of AS 1799 Part 1

  • AS 1799 Part 1 provides the foundational safety criteria for powered craft up to 15 meters, including buoyancy, stability, and maximum load capacities.

  • The fire protection requirements in AS 1799.1:2025 are currently under review for integration into a dedicated section of the standard, as per Note 3.
