AS 1684.4 – 2024 Edition – Residential timber-framed construction, Part 4: Simplified – Non-Cyclonic Areas
AS 1684.4 specifies the requirements for building practice, as well as the selection, placement, and fixing of structural timber elements used in timber-framed Class 1 and Class 10 buildings, as defined in the Building Code of Australia (BCA). The Standard also applies to alterations and additions to these building types.
Scope of AS 1684.4
This document provides:
-
Requirements and procedures for the correct specification and determination of timber members, bracing, and connections.
-
Guidance aimed at minimizing the risk of conditions that may compromise the structural performance of timber-framed buildings.
-
Applicable practices for the design and construction of other building classes, provided that the design criteria, loadings, and parameters fall within the limitations of this Standard.
Notes
Note 1:
Refer to AS 1684.1 for detailed design criteria, loadings, and other technical parameters.
Note 2:
Although AS 1684.4 may be used to design Class 10 buildings, building regulations and other Australian Standards may permit less conservative design levels for that class.
Note 3:
Advisory information on the construction and specification of timber stairs, handrails, and balustrades is provided in the FWPA publication (see Bibliography).
