AS 3700 – 2018 Edition – Masonry Structures
AS 3700 sets out the minimum requirements for the design and construction of masonry across multiple material types and construction methods.
Scope of AS 3700
This Standard covers the following types of masonry:
-
Unreinforced, reinforced, and prestressed masonry using manufactured clay or concrete units laid in mortar.
-
Unreinforced masonry using manufactured calcium silicate units laid in mortar.
-
Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) masonry laid in thin-bed mortar.
-
Square-dressed natural stone laid in mortar.
Exclusions
AS 3700 does not provide for:
-
Design values or material properties for masonry incorporating square-dressed natural stone.
-
Due to the wide variation in natural stone properties, each project must be assessed individually to determine appropriate design values.
-
-
Specific requirements for prefabricated masonry panels or masonry in composite action with steel or concrete structural members.
-
However, the principles of AS 3700 may still be applied where appropriate.
-
-
Design or construction requirements for AAC masonry laid in mortars other than thin-bed mortar.
-
For such construction, the general principles of this Standard may still be followed.
-
Note on Professional Competency
This Standard assumes that:
-
The structural design of masonry is performed by experienced structural engineers or appropriately qualified professionals.
-
The execution and construction work is carried out under the supervision of qualified personnel with substantial experience in masonry construction and a full understanding of the structural requirements specified in AS 3700.
