AS 3958 – 2023 Edition – Installation of ceramic and stone tiles

AS 3958 provides instruction on the preparation of the background and the bonded fixing and grouting of floor and wall tiles, including mosaic tiles and panels. It also provides information on the application of tiles in swimming pools, gradients on floors, screeds and rendering, cleaning and maintenance.

Specialized applications, such as the need for industrial chemical resistance, are not considered in detail.

AS 3958 applies to all work involved in the internal and external laying of ceramic and stone wall and floor tiles. It covers the types and classes of backgrounds and substrates, as well as their suitability to receive a bedded finish, using the following fixing methods:

(a) Bedding in sand and cement mortar on an intermediate substrate or by direct fixing.
(b) Bedding in proprietary adhesives on an intermediate substrate or by direct fixing.

Mosaic tiles and large panels constitute specialized forms of tiling and those aspects of fixing that require particular treatment are dealt with in this document.

AS 3958 does not address the safety concerns associated with the installation of tiles.
